Jeep was a concept developed during world war II. In the late 1930's / early 1940's, the United States asked 135 companies to develop a prototype for a vehicle that had 4 wheel drive, and could be used as a good recon vehicle. Despite the fact that the request went out to 135 companies, only two actually responded! The two companies that responded were American Bantam Car Company, and Willy's-overland. The army set a super hard timeline of 49 days to develop the prototype and deliver it, as the need was great for a reliable four wheel drive vehicle to move through warzones. Willy's-overland asked for more time. They were refused.

At the time, the Bantam car company was actually bankrupt. They had no engineers left on the payroll! So, in order to build the prototype, a freelance designer was hired named Karl Probst. Well, not so much hired, as Probst was not even paid a salary when he joined. However, Probst did manage to deliver on the deadline to the Army. The blueprint for the Bantam prototype was known as the BRC, and it was the first jeep. Eventually, jeeps made their way over from war time to civilian usage.
